What Is Phosphatidylcholine?

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the most abundant phospholipid in your body’s cell membranes. Found in foods like eggs, soybeans, sunflower seeds, and organ meats, PC plays a vital role in keeping your cells healthy and functioning at their best. PC is also a critical source of choline, a nutrient your brain needs to produce acetylcholine — the neurotransmitter responsible for memory, learning, and focus.

How Phosphatidylcholine Supports Your Brain

Your brain works harder than almost any other organ in your body, and it depends on PC to keep running smoothly. Inside your brain cells, PC gets broken down to release choline, which your brain then turns into acetylcholine — the chemical messenger that powers your memory, attention, and ability to learn new things. PC also acts like a protective shield around your brain cells, keeping them strong and helping the blood-brain barrier do its job of letting good things in and keeping harmful things out.

On top of that, new research is showing that PC may help quiet down inflammation in the brain — the kind of low-grade, ongoing inflammation that scientists believe contributes to mental fog and cognitive decline as we age. PC even supports the connection between your gut and your brain. A healthy gut lining helps your brain function at its best, and PC plays an important role in keeping that lining intact.

What Does the Research Say?

While much of the mechanistic research comes from laboratory and animal studies, several compelling human studies have linked phosphatidylcholine to better brain outcomes. A large Finnish study following nearly 2,500 men for over 20 years found that those with the highest dietary phosphatidylcholine intake had a 28% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those with the lowest intake. They also performed better on tests of memory and verbal fluency.

The Mayo Clinic Study of Aging, which followed over 1,400 cognitively healthy adults, found that higher blood levels of phosphatidylcholine were associated with slower amyloid plaque buildup, less brain shrinkage, and slower cognitive decline over time — all hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease progression.

Phosphatidylcholine and Longevity

As we get older, the amount of PC in our cells naturally goes down. When that happens, our cells don’t work as well — they have a harder time absorbing nutrients and clearing out waste. Replenishing PC may help slow down these changes and keep your cells acting younger for longer. Early research has even shown that PC can activate genes associated with longevity and boost the body’s natural antioxidant defenses.

But PC isn’t just good for your brain and your cells — it supports your whole body. PC helps your liver process and break down fats, and has been shown to support recovery from fatty liver disease. Research also suggests PC may help improve cholesterol levels, lower triglycerides, and support a healthy weight. And when it comes to your immune system, PC supports your immune cells and may help lower inflammation throughout the body.

Our Approach: IV Phosphatidylcholine Therapy

At our clinic, we offer phosphatidylcholine both as an oral supplement and as an intravenous (IV) infusion. IV delivery allows phosphatidylcholine to enter the bloodstream directly, bypassing the digestive system for efficient absorption.

Our IV phosphatidylcholine sessions typically run over approximately 1.5 hours in a comfortable, relaxed setting. One of the advantages of IV therapy is the ability to customize each infusion — we can add complementary nutrients and antioxidants to your IV based on your individual health goals. One of our most popular additions is glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant.

Glutathione plays a central role in detoxification, antioxidant defense, healthy aging and brain health. By combining phosphatidylcholine with glutathione and other targeted nutrients in a single IV session, we aim to provide comprehensive support for brain health, detoxification, and overall vitality.

Phosphatidylcholine is a multitasking nutrient that supports your brain at every level — from building healthy cell membranes to fueling the neurotransmitters you need for sharp thinking. Whether through diet, oral supplementation, or IV therapy, optimizing your phosphatidylcholine levels is a proactive step toward protecting your brain and supporting your long-term wellness
